How to Find Your Ring Size at Home

The most reliable way to find your ring size is a proper sizing at a jewellery counter, but a few home methods get close enough to shop with confidence, or to buy a gift without giving it away. The simplest: wrap a strip of paper or string snugly around the base of the finger, mark where it overlaps, measure that length in millimetres, and compare it against a standard ring-size chart.

Method 1: string or paper

Wrap a non-stretchy string or a thin paper strip around the finger where the ring will sit, mark the point where it meets, then measure the length flat against a ruler. That measurement is the finger's circumference, which converts directly to a ring size on most standard charts.

Method 2: an existing ring

If you have a ring that already fits the intended finger well, measure its inner diameter with a ruler, edge to edge across the inside of the band. This is usually more accurate than the string method, since it removes any guesswork about how snugly the string was wrapped.

Method 3: a printable sizing guide

A printable ring-size guide (a strip with graduated circles or a sizing stick outline) lets you compare an existing ring directly against a printed scale — useful as a second check against either method above, though printer scaling can introduce small errors if the page isn't printed at 100%.

Why it's still worth confirming in person

Finger size changes slightly with temperature and time of day — fingers are marginally larger in heat and smaller in cold — so a measurement taken at one moment is an estimate, not a certainty. For an important or expensive piece, an in-person sizing, or ordering with a resize option, removes that uncertainty entirely.

A home measurement is enough to shop with confidence; it isn't a substitute for trying the actual ring on before it's final.
